TESTING & VACCINATIONS

Having cattle, which we can prove to be healthy AND functional, is highly important to us.  Not only do we have annual testing for Johnes and Leukosis done, we also test for BVD-PI, have Pregnancy Ultra Sound testing done each fall on all of our breeding aged females, have Breeding Soundness Exams, including Trichomoniasis, performed on all of our breeding aged bulls; we also run DNA testing through NeoGen Canada to assure we are selecting only the best breeding type animals to continue building our little herds from.

In August of 2020, we began participating in the All Dairy Breeds Classification Program which provides Linear Scoring Assessment of the cows and bulls involved in our breeding program; defining not only the strengths of our cows' Rumps, Mammary System, Dairy Strength as well as Feet and Legs or their lack of strengths in any of those areas.  This helps us plan for future breedings so that we continue to breed small in stature, Jersey cattle which carry stronger than average traits than other small stature or miniature cattle.

Our herd is also vaccinated annually.  Our breeding aged females and bulls are vaccinated with a modified live virus (MLV) for strains of IBR, BVD (Types 1 and 2), PI3, and BRSV using Bovi-Shield Gold FP5 and calves are vaccinated with INFORCE 3 at birth and then followed at weaning by Bovi-Shield Gold One Shot for protection against BVD Types 1 and 2, IBR, BRSV, PI3 and Mannheimia haemolytica.  Finally, cattle 3 months of age or older are vacinated with Covexin Plus as an aid in the prevention of disease caused by Clostridium tetani, C. chauvoei, C. septicum, C. novyi Type B, C. haemolyticum, C. sordellii, and C. perfringens Types C & D. Immunity is also provided as an aid in the prevention of diseases caused by the beta and epsilon toxins of an additional organism, C. perfringens Type B. Although C. perfringens Type B is not a significant problem in Canada, immunity is derived from a combination of Type C (beta) and Type D (epsilon) C. perfringens fractions.

We use Lactanet milk testing for both Johnes and BLV as well as Mastitis Screening

We use Neogen Dairy Select for all of our DNA testing for the following:
